I had been wanting to take a year out and to travel for many years while I was studying in university and even before I started studying. I thought about taking a gap year out before heading into university but in the end decided to go straight from high school back into studying for a Science career.
I have to say, even though I really did enjoy my chosen subjects at Trinity College, I continued to pine for new experiences, to have some free time in a new environment and to take a break from studying to recharge my batteries before getting back into my final studies for my Master’s Degree.
Not only were my airplane tickets paid for me to Beijing, I was greeted at the airport by the school that I chose to work for, and then I was provided with a beautiful private apartment located in a fine area of Beijing. I was really surprised.
Not only that, but I soon realized that of the $3000 per month salary that I was paid, I was able to save the vast majority of it because I basically had no living expenses. I only worked 30 hours per week and a great amount of free time off so that I could travel around and really take in the culture.
I so much enjoyed living in China and it was such a surprise to me. The people are so very polite and friendly and there is so much to do and see. I really miss all the friends that I made while I was teaching English in China and I am seriously thinking about going back to China to teach English on full-time basis and to pursue this as a career.
I would highly recommend to anyone who is thinking about taking a year out to go and to teach English abroad to take the dive and just go for it. When you are working with the right people this can be such an amazing experience.
Many thanks to the great team at TEFL recruiters for helping me find the right job!
Hi Ann! I really liked your story...I too took a year out after I qualified from my science degree and have actually decided to do a second year teaching in Shanghai. This is a great way to take a break, refocus and save money! So glad you enjoyed Beijing x
I took a year out after UNI too, really impressed with the pay and conditions.
